so... I'm going back to my home state for the first time in a decade.

my family ranges from a couple of cool democrats (one other atheist, even!) to fairly moderate catholics with good hearts to wing-nut born-agains with major boundary issues.

although I think I have some good strategies ready in case things take a turn for the worse, I'd appreciate some further input.

The maquiladora Confecciones Monclova has been in the city of Frontera, Coahuila for 12 years. The workers? weekly salary ($34.78) is less that half of a living wage. This maquiladora produces clothing brands such as HANES, Guy Harvey, No Fear, Gap, and Port & Company,

Confecciones Monclova is part of the transnational corporation Sara Lee headquartered in Chicago. Sara Lee owns companies in 55 countries and sells products in over 200 countries. Sara Lee produces household products, food and beverages. In clothing alone, Sara Lee has over 27 brands with sales of over $100 million in 2003.

The workers at Confecciones Monclova organized to demand that their rights be respected as working women; they demanded to be able to choose their own union, have a safe work place, and be paid a living wage. Sara Lee plans to close this factory in response to the workers' efforts.

According to the company's own statements, this factory is profitable as part of what Sara Lee calls "one of the largest and most profitable apparel businesses in the world.?
On June 10, 2004 Sara Lee announced it will close this plant in September. The factory will be converted into a small distribution center with only 50 workers. This will leave 1,200 people unemployed. Sara Lee claims that this factory is being closed due to "changing production requirements and preparedness for apparel trade restrictions". These restrictions are scheduled to be removed Jan. 1, 2005.
The reality however, is that this factory is closing because workers there were openly organizing to improve their working conditions. In fact, another nearby Sara Lee clothing factory where workers are not visibly organizing remains open.

The worker?s demands are:
? Do not close the plant
? No firings of workers before the labor issue is resolved
? Sara Lee, (consistent with its own employee work rules) provides independent doctors to diagnose and treat the hundreds of workers in the plant suffering from work-related illnesses
Sara Lee should not and does not have to bring more misery to the people of the world by competing in the race to the bottom.

Please write a letter of support and meet with other organizations to gain their support for this cause.

The critical day for the company to receive these communications is Thursday September 9, the day solidarity actions will occur in Chicago, Mexico and elsewhere.

Please sign a letter of solidarity on the letterhead of your organization, and send it by fax or regular mail to ENLACE?s office before September 7. We plan to hand over all of the letters directly to the corporation and to publicize the many organizations that are in solidarity with the workers in Coahuila.

a)

i had a dream george lucas released a version of star wars that was full of all kinds of bullshit add-in CGI shit [well yeah, he really did that, but there's more] in which some sort of robotic gnome creatures were playing some sort of betting game in which one had to guess which of several different layers of colored liquid would float to the top of the container when mixed.

don't ask me, I had lots of tacqueria cancun salsa, corona, and oranjeboom with dinner.

New Loki Story for January

Hi there--

In acknowledgment of the holiday madness, the latest Loki story has been posted at the beginning of January instead of the end of December (the elves started to slack as soon as they realized being sent back to Santa's workshop was just an empty threat).

Look for this trend of posting near the beginning of the month to continue throughout '04...

In addition, only one story (instead of two) has been posted this time, since this month's story is considerably longer than those posted recently.

Although none of the Loki stories are suitable for the Unusually Delicate Constitution Sewing Circle, this one is a wee bit more NC-17 than most. That's probably just fine with you naughty little creatures, so we'll leave it at that.
